Can someone tell me what this part does? It was attached by two bolts to the bottom of the diff housing and tethered by a steel wire.
It recently fell off on the Kalumburu Road north of Drysdale Station. It conveniently hung by the tether and proceeded to make its presence known by being flung up under the vehicle with a few loud bangs.
It presume it is some sort of counterweight or vibration/resonance weight?
The vehicle has done 4,000km since then with no discernable difference noticable.
Thanks,
^ What he said.
It looks like part of it is missing.

it looks a bit home madecompared to Ron's picture
Thanks all.
The steel wire tether is still attached at the diff housing end, cable tied up out of harms way. It was easier to undo the bolt at the balance weight end when under the vehicle.
Its definantly not home made, its just now got a few dents from its expedition hanging underneath the vehicle, and is covered in some nice Kimberley red dirt!
Now, is it worth putting it back on???![]()
Leave it off.

As mentioned it is a vibration dampner, if you leave it off it will induce some vibration in your rear springs if you don't have air springs.
From my experience there has been no other problems caused by leaving it off

I'm glad stuff fell off your Disco on your Kimberley trip as well, and it wasn't just something mine did![]()
Mine waiting until Broome to fall off. I thought I had broken a tooth of a gear in the diff or something. It would run a long for a few seconds and then THUMP. Freaked me out a a minute or so. Then I stopped and found it hanging. I guessed it was designed to fall off as it had the tether wire.
Happy Days
Mine fell off too - many years ago. I can't remember if it fell off before the plates designed to protect rear discs or after. I do remember they all made unattractive sounds as they liberated themselves.
In my view, a good weight reduction achieved.
