    Auto Trans Question

Hi all looks like i have toasted my auto in a series of bad event in one day i have had to leave my caravan 50ks nth of Miles and nurse the car home to the Gold Coast just had it to the auto trans guys and its all bad the oil from it has stunk the whole workshop out and there all sorts of stuff in the pan only serviced before the trip but no fault of the guys its all my fault anyway i am not keen to spend mega dollars on a auto that's been cooked so i would sooner get a secondhand unit and if need rebuild it but my question is will a v8 fit the td5 is it just the bell or are there other differencers as they seem easier to get hold of thank in advance.

nope, An '8 auto will not fit. a rebuild of yours should not be a problem so long as its a full rebuild! If thats your plan shop around, prices vary wildly. Go with a rep organization though. If the budget is good an Ashcroft is certainly the best option.

    A couple of thoughts..

Talk to A & B Transmissions in Dandenong, Vic. They'll point you in the right direction. Consider as well an upsized torque converter. AFAIR, TCE in Ringwood, Vic does work on these.

My Auto blew 4 months ago just hit over 217,000kms
been quoted $5500-$6k from a few garages (recon gearbox, transfer case seals redone and labour)
but picked up a second hand one off Gumtree for $1000 with 144000kms on it from mechanic and he installing it and re doing seals on transfer for extra $500
As im doing up my disco on a budget this was a easy choice
just depends what you want cause if you wait around a little and keep looking more then likely find a good second hand unit

With the TC's, there's 3 sizes, small, std TD5, med, std V8 (4.0) and lge, std V8 4.6. The TD5 can be upgraded to the medium unit but the large will not fit the bellhousing and possibly the auto as it's from the HP24 and the pump is different.

I would recommend for heavy towing an additional ATF cooler assuming that yours isn't already clogged with mud. I think this will go a long way to solving your problem. Once they get hot they unravel very quickly and towing will be putting a lot of heat into your auto. The larger TC will also reduce the heat output, but Im under the impression they are better suited to high output TD5's rather than stockers that work hard. Both a larger TC and an additional auto cooler will help with the problem.

I have attached a pic of the auto cooler i had to fit to replace the original that split i have towed the 2.5t van 6k with no trans heating problems even in summer and i drove 300ks with this temporary cooler fitted before it over heated outside temp 16c so something had to go wrong in the box to cause the toasting or towing the van along them long straight roads that feel as if your slowly climbing in 3rd TC not locked up for ks plus it was windy may have caused it but i will fit a larger cooler this time plus the lockup mod and hope that's the end of my overheating trans problems.

The TC not locking was the problem,, you rattler guys that tow need to change gear or something if the TC is not locking up,,
plus I'm not sure "just that" cooler was big enough anyway--

    lots of airflow though

where are you getting the lockup mod from?

I cannot understand why people persist in believing that the V8 & the TD5 autogearbox differ. They both use the ZF4H22PEH box with a different Torque convertor & convertor housing.
