Thread: Fuel economy for diesel

Just for you tank guys.

The worst economy I have ever had with the TD5 Disco was 15L/100km. That's excluding driving like I stole it around town which had been over 18L/100km. This has come from recording the past 72 tanks of fuel.

With the above information I should get 600km to my 90L tank at 15L/100km. I also always fill it up the spout so I know it's completely full. I'm not filling one tank 2 - 3 L less than the next. That extra up the spout also gives me a greater safety margin should I have to push it to the limit.

The best I ever got was under 10L/100km. It was the day I bought it. I filled up in QLD somewhere south of Brisbane then filled up at Yass (NSW). It was just over 900km and I put in 89.??L. I didn't record that tank so I don't have the exact figure.

Saying that was the best isn't quite right either. It was the best economy I got but the best was towing a trailer across the Barkley Hwy, I got 10.5L/100km. 10L/100km empty is good but 10.5L/100km while towing a trailer was remarkable.

Keep record of what your vehicle uses under what conditions and you'll know how far the fuel you have will get you. Don't rely on what could be a dodgy fuel gauge.

It usually comes on about 120km to go but with the rough conditions swishing the fuel about it was reading low. Once we got of the Mitchell falls rd the gauge came up but not enough for the light to go off by that stage.

I am lucky to get 900 out of my long range tank. Generally around 125 litres! But it is lifted 3 inches fair bit of stuff in it, roof racks and 31in tyres. That is with standard ecu on an auto with free flow exhaust.

Did actually get a bit better when I had my performance ecu in on a long trip, but had to pull it out as when used aggressively the EGT's went to 1100 degrees and I burnt through three head gaskets in 30000km. Now saving up for a new remap and nanocom to load it up myself.

10lt/100 without roof racks
11lt/100 with roof racks empty
12lt/100 with roof racks full (tyre, jerry, maxtrax,shovel).

15lt/100 towing heavy off-road camper trailer (with roof rack full)

I only get 550-600km and I only fit 265/75/16 M/T and std roof bars. No bullbar etc.

I only drive from home to work about 10km oneway everyday and around 40km on Saturday and Sunday.

Seeing all the figure that others get makes me think whether I need to get it check as it is using more than others. Unless the distance I am driving it everyday affect the consumption.

Also the idea that you'd be sucking the rubbish from the bottom of the tank, well I don't see if the rubbish isn't being lifted by the movement during normal driving then I cant see it lifting just due to low fuel.

Any one else had the thought that the fuel is taken from the bottom of the tank regardless of fuel level?

I am not set up for economy. As pointed out above by joel0407 what is on the vehicle/in the vehicle and being pulled by the vehicle are directly relevant to fuel economy. Here is my setup:

There is something wrong with your car, always has been, I've driven your car a few times, and I can tell you definitely, there is something wrong in there somewhere.

Even when I was towing with my TD5, I got better economy than when Phil owned your car and when you now own it.

My TD5, mid 10s (10.3l/100 being the best) to and from work, 13l to 14l/100k towing, best I ever got was 12.8l/100ks, that's 624ks out of the tank towing, that tank was Mackay (Bearmans place) to Upper Liverpool Creek(west of Tully QLD) on our Cape Trip.

Joel, the D2 tank is 95L.
I'm currently on around 14L/100km. MAF disconnected, boost modulator bypassed, flogging the crap out of it.
I was regularly getting 750-800km/ tank when stock and on Red Ps.
Safe to say it's gone slightly downhill now
However coming back from Glenreagh, fully loaded I still cracked 500km before half a tank so it's still got it
