Swapped out the old air springs today. Once I fully extended them and unfolded the rubber, the pin holes were easily visible all the way around. It looks like some grit/gravel has been trapped between the piston and the rubber, and worked its way through.
Not too bothered though, they lasted 14 years!
joel0407 suggested that I share the open and closed lengths, as it may help some people who are looking to raise or alter the suspension travel on their SLS D2.
So, here goes. (note these are approx +/- 5mm)
Absolute maximum, rubber fully extended - 395mm
Maximum while still maintaining the rubber fold over the piston - 370mm
Normal ride height - 270mm
Fully compressed, plastic to plastic - 145mm (rubber likely to interfere or get pinched)
Those measurements are from the top mounting surface to the bottom rim of the mounting cup. Take off ~25mm to get the bottom mounting face which is recessed.
Hopefully the pics help.
I'll attach the instructions too in case it helps anyone.
It will help immensely with working out if I need the extended bump stops or if I leave the extended bump stops, if I can raise the lower shock mount.
There wouldn't be a problem with the bag pinching as there would still be air holding it out. It's just on the bottoming out situations. I should note that I hardly ever bottom out on the Air Springs but I did frequently on heavy coils in the rear and still do with heavy 2" lifted coils in the front but I have extended bump stops in the front as well until I can get a set of higher Strut Turrets.
