    Half/drive shaft questions

Not having a great weekend, a mild hill and bang. No drive front or rear. Propshafts rotate so its time to pull apart the axels - so far it looks like a diff and probably a shaft up front and hopefully just a shaft at the rear.

Is there a good thread on this (all searches seem to bring up prop shaft removal only) please?

The reason I ask is rave is pretty light on this - remove callipers and undo nut, Haynes on the other hand talks about unstaking the nut first then removal and not to reuse the 32mm nut and locktite in all sorts of places on the shaft flanges.

Also, I thought you could pull the shafts without removing the diff first - is that correct?

You don't have to undo any shaft nuts at the front.
The axle shaft and hub come out as one piece , when you undo the 4 bolts behind the hub. Be careful of the ABS sensor and remove it first. It is a bit of a fiddle to get it through the small aperture.
I would think the rear is the same , but I haven't yet pulled one apart.
    Regards Philip A

OK thanks Philip so just a case of being careful of the o ring too when it's removed! You'd hope the rear is the same but this is land rover we are talking about

The rear is the same - remove hub and axle together by undoing the four bolts.

Here is the warning if you think replacing the diff seals is a good idea http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...leaking-4.html
