Discovery 2 Roof Rack, Cargo protection advice

Hi everyone, having just returned from a 2 weeks outback touring break across roads with a high degree of corrugations, I need some advice on how to protect the bottom of the cargo. I used a southerncross rooftop canvas bag but found that its bottom was ripped in multiple areas due to the constant vibrations over hundreds of kilometers on these rough roads. It is a flat Tradesman Engineering roof rack with netting across the bars. Looking for advice for options to protect cargo n the roof rack.

I wrapped medium density foam matting from bunnings around my roof bars to absorb the shock loads to support our (lightweight) kayak and oztent.

Survived 9 month trip fine so this may help.

How much weight do you have on your roof?

I would get rid of the (metal?) netting and use marine ply ( then foam if needed) so the load is distributed evenly.

    Cheers

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I won't be able to remove the netting as it is welded on. I would probably have arround 100kgs all up.

Lay some ply on top of the mesh, with either screws/clamps to fix it down, or zip ties. Then add a layer of h/density foam if required.

Or chuck on a rhino roof box. No canvas flapping and you can tie your gear down on the inside. I have one and love it. Beats towing

Lay some old carpet on your rack under your bag
