Gearbox removal - can't get the cross members off

I'm trying to change Daisy's clutch. It was all going so well until I got to removing the cross member and every. single. bolt. rounded. on. me.

    Stuck

Funnily enough the LR Disco 2 workshop manual only mentions taking off the cross member for a gearbox removal on a V8, it doesn't get mentioned for the TD5 - but that's got to be a mistake?

    My questions are:

    1. Am I right in thinking that I've got to get the cross member off.
    2. Has anyone else got stuck here and what did they do?
    3. Or is this the time to run up the white flag (I am doing this on the garage floor, Daisy is on axle stands, I've got a transmission jack adaptor for the car jack but no lift)

    Help!

Cut the heads off witth a grinder and get new Hard bolts,,the originals are
had the same problem twice in the las 6 months with 2 different vehicles,
they seem to rust into place from the top where water gets to them.
    cheers

    A good soaking in WD40
And this, may be worth a try...
Irwin 5 Piece Bolt Grip Base Set I/N 5610060 | Bunnings Warehouse

Ive had success with these but haven't with had to try on the cross member.

    Regards

I've struck the problem a few times - spray WD40 onto the thread end of the bolts, leave them like that for a while, then hammer an old 6 point 3/8" socket onto each bolt using a short extension bar and undo it. I also find that if one bolt won't come loose rotate the cross member and the bolt will probably loosen.

I have used the supercheap version of those tools when I removed the cross members on my td5 auto. They worked well for me.

Mrs L was clearly right when she told me to stop shouting at Daisy, take a shower, open a bottle of grape juice and call for help. I've already drenched the bolts with dubs 40 (can you get plus gas 30 in Oz? it makes WD40 look like treacle), tomorrow it's a trip to Bunnings and if all else fails it's grinder time. I'll keep you posted.

    Hello,
With mine they rounded as well, so I just heated them up with the oxy touch came out no trouble.

You might also need a high lift or screw bottle jack to spread the chassis a bit in order to release the cross member after getting the bolts out.

Mornin ron :-) , Disco 2 crossmembers bolt up from underneath, way better idea than the spread the chassis routine... However they are renowned for the aforementioned bolt removal problems...:-(

Ahh, thanks Justin. I thought the chassis was the same as the RRC.
