    Air Filter Elements

    The photos below are of an air filter element from a friends Series 2 Disco who came up yesterday. After checking we found birds feathers on the MAF. This is a common after market filter element and as far as I am concerned, they are rubbish

    When you count the filter element segments there are 76 give or take. The Genuine Land Rover elements have 89 segments' The problem with the after market elements as the physical strength of the sides isn't as good and they are prone to collapse, especially when working hard in sand, This happened to me as well once and I will ONLY buy genuine filters, They have come down in price and aren't that more expensive.

    Out of interest and for the sake of full disclosure and background info:
    How old is that filter?
    How long has it been fitted? Both time and km.
    Has it been reused at all? (i.e. shaken out, blown out with an air compressor, etc.)?

    I agree re buying genuine filters for the TD5. In this particular case, I buy genuine for every filter in it, but I think it is especially important for the air and oil centrifuge. I'm sure I've had centrifuges that don't spin.

    Less than 10,000kms, still relatively clean - probably because the air was bypassing the filter, about 9 months, not been checked, the guy does his own services, not his daily driver.

    I only checked because Nanocom showed a problem with the AFM and found bird feathers on the screen mesh of the AFM

    Do you know what brand it is?

    I believe that Mahle is the OEM supplier.

    I have not had any such issues with a K&N aftermarket brand item. It has held up very well. When off road I place a Unifilter foam sock into the Safari snorkel and sometimes a Unifilter cover over the air intake head of the snorkel too if it's really dusty.

    I believe it is a bit over the top to say all aftermarket filters are bad. It is probably just the el cheapo ones by Bearmach, AllMakes4x4 and Britpart that have the issues - these are half the price of some of the big filter company brands like Mahle, Cooper or Mann.

    I wonder if the filter shown has been wet at some stage.

    If wet a filter will collapse due to the vacuum created on the upper side .

    I must say I have had no problems with aftermarket filters with my D2 TD5.

    Maybe the feathers were from a duck.
    I also ask because that is the appearance of a filter that has been wet.

    That's exactly how my filter looked after getting wet then drying out after a few days (mud was deeper and wetter than it looked)

    I aggree it's looks likes it's been wet . The seal area also suggests it may have been reused or has been there a while .In ten years I have never used a genuine air filter ..I've only seen this type of thing when it has been wet at some time.

    The last 3 years I have only used Britpart ones and never had an issue both on the V8 and TD5.

    The problem with air filters is you only notice a problem if the filter is not sealing and the flow is bypassing like the one in the picture. You don't notice if the media is crap and letting through 10 or 20% more dust than the OE filter.
