MY first country trip in Disco 2

I have returned from my first trip in my new to me Disco 2 td5. (288000 kms) New oil and both filters (that screw on is a pain first time fitting one) and all went well. I felt it ran reasonably well but being my first diesel I don't really know what is good or what is slow in performance.
It ran quite well except i felt it seemed to struggle on long hills even pulled back to third gear (auto). I thought it may be struggling for fuel supply on the long hills but seemed ok on a couple of quick overtaking moves.
Driving up the long Mt Victoria hill west of Blackheath it struggled even back in second gear just holding speed but nothing more. Id have hated to be pulling any load.
Im thinking a new fuel filter might help.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks
    Brian

The thread by ERMPZ in particular has lots of info helpful to me learning all about my new to me td5auto. However some of the replys leave me floundering as I have yet to get to know all the acronyms. Some I can work out the meaning of and others well ... I'm struggling with.
Is there somewhere on this site I where I read up this basic info as I don't ( as yet ) have a workshop manual.

Try the same hill again but turn the climate control off, it makes a HUGE difference.
Also change the air filter, it may make more of a noticeable difference than changing the oil, not saying changing oil is a bad idea though. The air filter sucks dusty air from the front passenger wheel arch. I've had mine so dusty after 4WDing in the Vic High Country that the suction from the engine deformed the filter as it was so blocked. This also made the engine management restrict the boost, but if this happened you would probably have noticed as there is no acceleration on the flat let alone a hill when this happens.

If it makes a huge difference something's wrong...

in my case over the weekend in the Vic High Country was the wastegate actuator, car would not go above 3000rpms. It made it interesting as it rained... winch got a workout .... Fixed it yesterday, car back to normal powwer.

I should clarify turning the AC off makes a huge difference to throttle response and less to power or torque but noticeable.

Do you know what it could be? In every other car I've owned I've also noticed a difference in throttle response and fuel economy with and without aircon turned on. They are 1986 RRC, '92 Hilux 2X4, BA XR6, Subaru Impreza 2.0. I also assumed the extra load on the engine is why the manufactures also used a switch under the accelerator peddle to turn off the AC compressor and tell the auto models to drop a gear at full throttle.

But if the TD5 Disco is different and something is wrong I want to know about it.

All your examples given are petrol...
The TD5 doesn't have a switch under the pedal

A std TD5 will hold pace up almost any hill or range....

Can you get it on a diagnostic unit
