    Diff rebuild TD5

    Hello,
I am having a go at rebuilding my front and rear diffs as changing the ratio and the new pinion gear it has +20 engraved on the top so what I believe is I drop the new pinion down 20 thou ?? to keep the height it was from the center line of the carrier bearings was 3 inches before stripping it. Any advise would be great thanks

You need to shim it to the right preload, which means you need to trial fit the thing, if it's wrong, then pull the bearing, change shims, rinse repeat.
There are some good threads on LR4X4 on the process.
I'll confess, the kit and parts needed have dissuaded me from considering it a home job.

    Yes Been through it
A while ago, I've put ashcroft c/p in and had to pull apart a few times to shim, I'd suggest buying a grab kit of shims,
If it's not.right then you will need replacement shims,

    Diff Ratio

We fitted ARB lockers and changed the ratio to suit 33 tyres on a D1, the boys and a D2 ours, I am not an expert on diffs but we had one rebuilt locally that was not a good experience so we decided to do them ourselves.
The D1 LR manual has a good chapter on diff rebuilds vol 2 of 2.
We did not have the LR measurement jig, so we used a steel rule across the bearing journals and took a reading from the rule to the top of the pinion assy,
Minus the rule width we shimmed it to 39.5mm.
If you fit the pinion assy and torque it to pre load the bearings.

    Hello,
Many thanks for the replies I do have 2 shim kits from Ashcroft picked them up while over there a couple of weeks ago. It seems pretty much what I have already I did read that +20 was to set it back that much.
I did phone a couple of places here in Perth but cheapest was $500 each to just rebuild the same price as taking the whole truck there and them stripping and fixing then back in to the axles, I did try to explain that they were stripped and only the rebuild was needed, not one listened to what I was asking, so I not paying that.

Add 20 though to pinion height shim

You set pinion height with shims under out race closest to pinion head

Pinion bearing preload comes after pinion bearing height, 2 different steps

    Hello,
Well got my head around it took a couple of hours all up I had a couple of packets of shims from Ashcrofts I haven't used the height ones as there were enough in the box from GBR. Much easier than I thought still have the front one to go.
