I am in the same boat as you at the moment,However if it was to be a "good"used engine for me it would have to be a known reco with top hat liners,Basically these engines are getting to old for them to be in a "good" used condition whatever "good" means.

Cheers. I think a second hand low k 4.6 and then top hats. It's getting hard to get them. I might end up just getting a Hong Kong 4.0 and stick it in complete.

    Cheers

Yes. Typically their d2's do around 20k-40k. Good means well looked after, not overheated and good compression on all 8 pots...

I still think that overheat is the main problem with these motors...mines been badly overheated twice and at 265k still has no liner shift so even heat does not always knock them off.

    Can the V8s by re-linered.
I hear comments about changing to top hat sleeves but no one talks about re-sleeving.
My motor overheated and now theres no compression.
I would prefer re-sleeve if possible than pay for another good 2nd hand one.

Yes they can be re linered,However to completly rebuild the engine can sometimes be worth more than the vehicle, particulary if the vehicle is getting on and things like the auto etc are aproaching their use buy date as well.

Top hat sleeves is re-linering just with a top had liner. They are just a different style of liner.

If you are going to all the effort of relinering why would you not go to top hat liners.

Most likely using standard liners will not solve the issue anyway as there are likely cracks in the block around the block/liner interface which will continue to cause issues with standard liners.
