Cleaned squirrel cage AKA heater fan today

My heater fan started to make a clackity noise on start up so I thought "time to clean"
I expected some leaves but was surprised to find a complete but dismembered ball point pen in there, plus a few leaves.

I pulled the squirrel cage off only to find lots of carbon under it, I suppose from the brushes. I oiled it up at each end and put it back together.

Easy job except for the no see the screws.

And WHY does Land Rover use foam that completely crumbles to dust in 10years for the lower cover? I cut up a surplus Pilates mat and replaced it , as it just was dust which compressed into a small ball.
So be careful if you place ball point pens on the dash. There must be a clear drop via the demist vents.

I had a fire inside my heater fan on an XF falcon. Leaves worked their way through to the fan and friction from the fan blades ignited them. It was like an autumn incineration of leaves, the amount of smoke was some thing I can not describe.

I had a mouse in my D1 a while back. Died from the injuries sustained from centrifugal force.

    Photo here if interested.

Ahh vegetation in the ventilation system I pulled a shopping bag of leaves and grass out of the Pulsar's vent system after I bought it, not to mention the steel ball bearing inside the seat chassis rail. Story link follows.

The things you find in the strangest places

Next it will be time for you to do the small air sensor fan to the right of the steering column, another fiddly job

    Cheers

Did the sensor last week, as I was in the area fitting a brake controller. I have it down to about 10 minutes now, grille off, vacuum with bit of hose on it, spray with electronic cleaner.
