    Lighten the load

The other day, I was compelled to empty our 99 D2 TD5 Auto of everything. Breakdown toolbox, recovery gear, kids seat, everything in the storage compartments front , rear and centre, hats, spare jumper and jacket, kids soccer ball,, the list went on.
I drove it today, and what an increase in performance!, wow, how much weight did I remove from it..
Sadly, it was to be my last drive in the white wagon, because my trip turned out to be one way. I kind of knew that it would be. I had a great conversation with a bloke at my destination about D2's,, he owns two of them,,, like we do...But regrettably I shook hands with this fellow and left our D2 with him, the Suncorp Insurance Assessor. The level of Hail damage in Brisbane last week while the D2 was parked in Brisbane CBD resulted it being written off today. We'll get a bit over $6000. Now to search for a Evoque, FL2 or D4 for the wife. I will receive our other 2003 D2 as my daily drive, so not such a sad story. I never took the time to look back at the white wagon as I got in the taxi to go home, I think I should have.

I could feel the load in my P38A yesterday as I was climbing out of the valley where I'd been camped and also later when I wanted to overtake cars. When I was stopped having lunch I tried searching for a local weighbridge so I could get the car weighed when it was fully loaded for camping but to no avail.

I took my P38A over a weighbridge this morning as it was still loaded with most of the stuff I had when I went camping.

With driver on board, it came in at 2810kg. The owner's manual gives the following figures for the 4.6 litre petrol auto model. So it's 30kg above GVM and that's with a half-full long range tank and only one person on board.

The Rangie has a roof rack, awning, long range tank, an LPG tank, Kaymar rear bar and wheel carrier. It doesn't have a bull bar (I took it off). It's fitted with drawers, an Engel fridge, and the tent was on the roof rack.

    GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT
    Total ................................ 2780 kg
    Maximum Payload................. 603 kg

    EEC KERB WEIGHT
    ......................................... 2220 kg

NOTE: EEC KERB WEIGHT is the minimum vehicle specification plus full fuel tank and 75 kg (165 lb) driver.

NOTE: GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT is the maximum all-up weight of the vehicle including driver, passengers, and equipment. This figure is liable to vary according to legal requirements in certain countries.

And ironically this extra is often the cause of the failure you need it all to fix

I hope you enjoy your D4. Please feel free to drop in from time to time to let us all know how much more comfortable having independent suspension all round is and even though you thought having live axles front and rear was a big deal up the bush, it turns out for the driving you do the D4 suspension and traction control works wonders.

If I had the funds i'd also probably consider it.
