    TD5 Torque Converter

I have been meaning to write this report for some time now. It was a case of getting round to it.

Last May after having replaced the torque converter three times in my '99 Disco 2 auto, I bit the bullet and installed an up-graded unit. After much searching including the UK I came across one made by Torque Converter Tech in Victoria. Unlike the converters modified by a company here in Perth which who use standard converters, this company uses a converter out of a Range Rover V8 - a size larger than the standard Disco one. Still fits into the bell housing. Modifications are a heavier clutch plate, bearing and the vane? angles are changed.
What a joy to drive the engine doesn't rev to 2700 rpm before changing, now it changes between 2200 and 2500 depending heavy your foot is. Towing my two tonne van is now a pleasure, changes are very positive and goes into lock-up with no slippage. When towing the gearbox oil temperature sits around 150 to 160 degrees even on very hot days. Instead of 170 plus. Yes, I do have an extra oil cooler, however that was installed about three years ago and the ECU is chipped. After 28,000 Km every thing is good - touch wood.

    Hi xaymaca
The cost of the converter from TCT was $850 plus freight plus GST.
They ask that you return your unit to them. Sort of service exchange.
I cannot remember the cost of installation.

    Thanks for the report.
Are you serious about your temperatures? I was worried about my transmission getting to 115 degrees towing 2.5 tons up Cunningham's gap. Mine is measured on the pipe which leaves the auto box & heads to the cooler. There are many conflicting views as to the max allowable ATF temperatures.
