It might sound ridiculous but spray the belt with something, belt grip, soap or even a CRC type product.
I have known belts to make the most horrible metallic noises, unbelievable.
Could get lucky.

Hi All,
Just after some advice as to what this noise may be; coming back from a camping trip I noticed this strange noise, made it home thankfully, and now trying to diagnose.
I suspect it's either the power steering pump, water pump, or viscous fan bearing.
Here's what I've gathered:
- Belt off the noise is totally gone
- The noise appears to be louder from the power steering pump side
- The idler and tensioner bearings are smooth
- The AC clutch bearing seems fine is also smooth
- There is a slight noise in the viscous fan bearing
- There is some play in the power steering pump, but I don't know how much is normal - I think I'm feeling slack in the water pump drive
- The Crankshaft Pulley/Damper appears to be ok, there is a ~1mm forward/aft movement (with a screwdriver) and about <2mm rotational movement; the whole thing feels solid, the outer ring isn't touching the inner ring.

Any ideas??
Thanks, Carl

Recently had the same noise so I replaced the harmonic balancer as it showed the same wear as yours. Put everything back together again & hey presto, the noise was still there. Changed the steering pump - noise gone.
+ 2016 D4 TDV6
After some spannering the noise is now gone!
I ended up changing the Power Steering Pump for a second hand unit, and replaced the Viscous Fan Bearing while I was in there. The bearing was average, but I think the noise was from the Power Steering Pump.
Thanks for your help!
