VSB14 and engineering certificate for wheels and tyres
VSB14 sucks!
Late last year my application was submitted to Tasmanian Department of State Growth Registration and Licensing Branch for modifications to my D2a.
It has come back with pre approval for the suspension modification (75mm) raise, wheels and tyres but with a condition that the tyres do not exceed 50mm larger diameter than the largest originally fitted by the manufacturer (which was 255/65R16). Pre approval means that I can make the modifications and then take the vehicle to an Approved Engineering Signatory for assessment.
VSB14, which Tasmania has adopted, prohibits their ability to approve anything that exceeds:
- 150mm total lift (tyres, suspension and chasis spacers)
- 75mm suspension lift maximum
- 50mm body blocks (chasis spacers) lift maximum
- 50mm increase in tyre diameter maximum (which equates to only 25mm actual lift)
So whilst a vehicle can be engineered for up to 150mm of lift, this lift has to be made from a combination of 75mm suspension, 50mm body blocks and 50mm larger tyres - no other combinations. What I cannot understand then is who needs 125mm more lift just to fit 50mm larger tyres!?!
My original application proposed 75mm suspension lift and 150mm tyre size increase (for a 75mm lift) - which would give a total lift of 150mm. The suspension proposal has been accepted but they won't budge on the tyres - so they'll allow me the 100mm lift and if I want more I can only go the body blocks option!
Next stop is to find a State that hasn't yet fully adopted this stupid standard!
