Question TD5 Spin On Oil Filter - which is the OEM brand?

I recently purchased a Mahle LPX100590M (OC 298) spin on oil filter for my TD5 under the belief that Mahle was the OEM brand.

I couldn't use it though as the filter has a hex shape on the bottom:

which meant that I couldn't use the DA1117 tool for removal and fitment (with the VNT the space is too tight for me to tighten by hand only - it leaks):

The genuine filters have the right shape and are a different colour, so I assume Mahle are therefore not the OEM supplier:

Britpart, AllMakes4x4 and Bearmach all have the right shape though:

The Coopers filters have the right shape too, but they seem to be NLA:

Is it worth spending the seven times more for the genuine filter or do the pattern ones do fine? With the centrifuge I get the genuine one as you can hear the difference in spinning, but is this filter as important or is there as big a difference between the genuine and pattern in quality/performance?

According to the part number that DA1117 is a britpart tool so it will fit to a britpart filter or similars, i dont really know the quality difference but Mahle is certainly the OEM and according to the workshop manual you need a strap type filter wrench for it in which case doesnt matter what shape it is IMO, see this list http://www.lrdirect.com/LPX100590-Oi...;sfi=LPX100590

And 'similars' includes the genuine Land Rover filter - actually so far it includes every filter brand except for Mahle!

Genuine LR should be Mahle with a LR badge on it IMO...cos afaik that's what OE means... though i've never bought genuine LR only Mahle

Maybe they should be, but they're not. I've put pictures in the original post showing this.

Mahle to release its after market version likely changed the casing profile to keep its OEM supply different.

Wear a nitrile glove to help tighten by hand...

I only hand tighten without a problem.

That's pure logic , though there are many manufacturer's who are making suitable fiters, scroll down to the cross interchange parts list LPX 100590,LAND ROVER LPX 100590; Oil Filter i didnt check all but another good brand is like Mahle at the bottom http://www.yoyopart.com/oem/8422402/...180012300.html and the Mann(which is good too) is different than all the others http://www.yoyopart.com/oem/37484/ma...er-w7139.html#

x2 , should only need to be hand tightened, if you have limited access due to mods and you have to use a tool / strap just do it up the equivalent of hand tight, no doubt Tombie , you have had more than a few squashed filters to deal with

Paddock spares UK market the Mahle filter as premium, OEM. A strap type filter tightener works for me. Bob
