It is not the engine that is the problem, it is the operators, and so called maintainers. The elephant in the room was the electronics. It frightened people. It may surprise some to know a TD5 D2 broke the record , driving from England to Cape town. Without a problem. Those who embraced the technology, took the time to understood the vehicle, realised what an asset it was, felt comfortable with it. As for engine changes, head problems, etc, another urban myth , but made reality in Australia in remote areas because no one knew how to maintain the vehicle.
