    AUTO TRANSMSSION WOES TD5 continued

    Hi,
Firstly a bit of background. 1999 TD5 AUTO. Transmission fully rebuilt by repairer 15 months ago, cost $2500 ish. Recently blew a tranny oil cooler pipe resulting in no drive and a big mess. Replaced pipe hoping no further damage, but now it wont take any oil up into the system, sump is full, ran car at idle, ran through gears, no go. Removed oil cooler pipes and started car, no oil flow at all, removed pipe from bottom of tranny, started car, still no oil pumping through. Diagnosis: More than likely tranny oil pump has died. Im a bit over it now, all I wanted was a cheap tow vehicle for the boat. So I am in a little predicament with not a lot of cash to play with. Should I get the tranny removed and the oil pump replaced, cost of oil pump only is around $520. Or should I just find a cheap s/h tranny and swap them over, or should I just give up and sell her as is. Engine seems to be pretty good, car has 410000 kms on it, body pretty good, tyres ok.... Hmmm not sure which way to go... I paid around $5k for it when I bought it, but what is it worth with a bung tranny? Any advice guys?

    Taspez67's Auto Transmission puzzle

    HiTaspez67,
Ido not know a lot about automatic transmissions, but I have drained andreplaced fluid in my Disco 2a half a dozen times, and replacedthe transmission fluid filter. So I can picture your situation, and acouple of thoughts occur to me.
Inan earlier post, you said that you had drained the auto trans sump and takenthe fluid filter off, then left the car like that for several weeks beforereplacing the fluid - correct? But you didn't say that you had fitted a newfilter - correct?
Now,transmission fluid that has been used by the system for a long time containsquite a lot of suspended matter. Could it be that the sediment previously collected on thefilter has dried, caked and hardened in the several weeks that you had it off? If youthen put the filter back on instead of replacing it, fluid may not be able pass throughit.
Secondly isit possible that something has got inside the pick-up pipe on the fluid filterand blocked it? Don't laugh, but... something like a mouse?
    Andrew

Is the o-ring seal on the filter pickup pipe intact ? If not, the pump won't prime.

    ???

You might try opening up the inspection plate that you use to get to the torque converter mounting bolts, then fire the engine up and see if the TC is spinning.
It's not an area I am that familiar with but if the flex plate has broken then the TC won't spin and no oil pressure.
As also said, probably not a lot to be lost by taking the sump off again and double check the O ring and pick up, because I think after that you are looking at the box coming out for any further diagnosis.
As far as I can see, if you don't have oil pressure, TC is spinning then everything else that is wrong needs removal to inspect.

For the WIN! Upon inspection I found the O ring formerly on the filter was sitting in my drain tray, fitted it up, filled up with oil, followed the filling process and BOB's your auntie, all good. Thanks for the tip Kev, and thanks to the other contributors, I'm now a happy camper, for the time being.
