Remove the exhaust manifold to install it though as getting the swarf out from drilling and tapping the probe into the manifold would be just about impossible otherwise. You can deweb the manifold at the same time.
I installed the guage into the ash tray and also got a cheap buzzer(Jaycar) which is triggered by the temp guage at 703 deg C(which stops you having to watch the guage). Money well spent me thinks.

I have just installed one of these: Exhaust Temperature - Pyro/Turbo (EGT) Special

Thermocouple is installed through the EGR blanking plate. I am seeing temperatures up to 700 deg towing a 2.5 ton van.

Currently running a madman ems1. Had a set of "race tech" eBay gauges on my D1. Both seem good.

For ease of install, u can't beat the egr blanking plate location.
