    Dumb question, colour of coolant.

The car I am looking, has coolant in the overflow tank that looks like water. Is this normal for LR Discoverys?
I'd expect a flouro colour, or am I wrong?

    Thanks

    Bo

I'd expect either fluoro green (glycol based) or orange (OAT coolant).

If there is no color in the coolant be very wary of the vechile.Lack of proper inhibiter will have a detrimental effect on the cooling system, eg. Corrosion , and blockages, with overheating and damage.

agree. This shows that the system has been topped up with water. Probbably leaking somewhere. This is a warning buzzer on this vehicle if you are considering buying it

I agree to a point. I have a minor coolant leak from the radiator - so I top up with water. The reason? When I bought the car it had green coolant in it - it is a TD5 and I want to put Nylon OAT in it, but until the mix gets too watered down (about 30%) then it isn't a massive deal to me.

Open the bleed screw and see what comes out, and ask the guy, could be something simple so I wouldn't discount it on that fact.

If there is no coolant in it I would steer well clear of it.
Not only potential cooling system problems, this also demonstrates to me a general lack of care and maintenance.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

I need to get prepped with a tool kit and a list of things to check, or let the RACV give it the once over.
The vehicle may be ok, but.....

Better to let someone qualified and familiar with d2's look at it , but you should probably budget for oil cooler , fuel cooler O rings, and possible head repair if you don't know how long it's been running water , especially if it was town tap water, make sure of no blow by , as others have mentioned it indicates a general lack of care/ maintenance. Not saying don't buy it if the rest looks good , but allow for a money and time tax to get it up to speed
    Cheers

Bought my D2 had no colour in coolant so I assumed water. Flushed and refilled with OAT coolant. Showed up coolant leaking from fuel cooler O rings. Fixed fuel cooler and replaced radiator as routine.

60,000 kms and 4 years later still no cooling issues

Bought from a car dealer with logbook etc

    Regards
