Do some research on the procedure first
I've had a Tdi Disco and now a Td5. Both cars have had the same symptoms that you describe (sound of water flowing/bubbling behind the dash/heater). The cause of the problem was the same in both cars ... head gasket!
In your case, I hope I'm wrong.
It's kinda coincidence, news from few minutes ago: a friend of mine called me some time ago to tell me the same symptom but his was corroborated with very slow undetectable coolant loss too, my guess was also some air trapped in the matrix but today he called me again to complain that he's got a positive result with a sniff test so most likely HG failure(let's hope not crached head)
maybe it would be good for your peace of mind to run a sniff test on it even though for diesels it's not always relevant but it's cheap and could reveal things
I had a tk test done today and she failed so what to do now do I fix the head or sell it for what I can get 'she owes me $16000 and I have had 3 quotes all around $6000 what to do?
Gezza , that is too much unless you need a new head in which case you won't know until removal. If you can turn a spanner you can do the job yourself, there is a good chance that you won't need a head. A little of topic but is this the gezza that Leith (tintacar) told me about.
I look after his Landy
You could get a whole new engine for $6000 - doesn't sound right.
There has been a couple of recent threads regarding head repairs/replacement and pricing.

I'd get a breakdown of those quotes and what what they are covering first.
Unfortunately the car isn't worth much with a blown head/gasket so you're between a rock and a hard place. If the rest of the car is in good repair and you plan to keep it, I'd be inclined to do it, as better the devil you know.....
Cheers

Mines a V8, and Ive just been through the trickling noise dilemma. Was a head gasket leak, caused a drop in coolant level and air in the heater core.
Despite the doom and gloom i was told by the mechanic, Ive replaced the head gaskets and all good.
But the running water sound in the heater sound remained after my coolant refill so i used my trusty camping shower to flush the heater core and refill it properly.
Then connected it all back up, and no more air trapped in, and no more running water noise.
Need to purge all the air out of the heater core.
Heres some pics of how i do it ...
