    Quick decision needed

I've found a '04 TD5 with 163,000kms I'm thinking about purchasing. It will be used as a 2nd car I can drive when need be (1 - 2 times a week) and hopefully chuck the mrs and 2 young kids in the back at least 3-4 times a year and get away on the beach camping. Cream leather interior with black piping, and black paint.

Asking price is $16K (too much in my eyes) and I had a pre purchase done on it from a mob in Redcliffe. Here is what I heard back today:
If I can't get it for 10K, walk away. There's about 3K-4K of "the usual suspects" worth of repairs apparently. Injector harness has oil ingress, rocker cover gasket leaking, front cam plug o ring weep, fuel block weep (I think this has to do with the fuel pressure regulator), new radiator, exhaust manifold gasket leaking, engine mounts sagging, front driveshaft cardon unis showing signs of starting to seize - recommend replacing with serviceable type, transfer case overhaul recommended as intermediate shaft seals leaking and third diff / diff lock area worn, rear drive shaft coupling has cracks, water pump leaking.
Car dealer said he could get the work done for me a lot cheaper himself and I could possibly negotiate the price down to 14.5K. I informed him if he were to get the work done, I still want to take it back to MR Auto so they can check if the work has been done properly. He had no problem with it. Other option is he will find out total cost of repairs and take it off the price.
At the end of the day, it still has a scrape down the bottom of the passenger side front and rear door, tiny bubbles coming through on bonnet paint, and some defective paint on the corner of the roof. So for 14.5k I need to make my mind up if it's worth it. Decisions...
    Appreciate any advice.

Yep, go with MR's advice. Whilst the ks artnt bad it appears it has been neglected, so could be other hidden items. These cars do need regular servicing, if it is neglected things rear their heads. Some of those items are easy diy others a modicum of mech knowledge required. IF the dealer knocks the cost off, like down to 8 it may be ok.
    Cheers Scott

Car dealers can always do things cheaper. But will they use cheap parts?
Engine mounts I have photo of engine mounts that have done 10,000 kms "the ones the Car yards use to pass road worthies", and they collapsed, next to them a 260,000 kms Engine mount Genuine still looks like new.
Rocker cover gaskets, there are cheapies and then there are good ones, yes you can save costs by using inferior parts, it'll pass and sell a car, but after they have your money then your on your own.
Paint problems usually mean poor or cheap panel beating . If its at a local car yard, consider where they buy their whole sale cars from. A special landy dealer might have a better pick of the good vehicles, the ones that don't make the grade go wholesale for thr little caryards to sell and they are dollied up. A steam clean gets rid of major expense oil leaks as well as a tube of silicon
Check the history of the vehicle. Has it been bingled?
A lot of money to spend unless its a really honest good one.

I'd be running away from that car just as fast as I can. Too many known and unknown issues. Have patience and a far better honest vehicle will surface for you.

Can you/are you willing to do the repairs yourself?
    If not Walk away.
The list of repairs required for the kms of that vehicle suggests to me it has never been maintained and likely to have additional issues unseen.
Any vehicles clear coat paint starts to get thin and milky at this age but bubbles are more an indication of previous panel work (maybe hail)

If the dealer paid too much, too bad, don't pay for the dealers mistakes.
If the answer to the first question is yes, the number the dealer needs to accept begins with a max of 6.
In any other case walk away.

Too expensive. D2's are not rare vehicles, there's plenty of others for sale.

Yep there are some ridiculously cheap D2A bargains around that need work, and people have been picking them up for anywhere from $2.5 k to $6 k, I just get beaten to the draw and find out too late. Yes they are require money spent on them, but no where near the cost of $16k .

I bought my 99 td5 with 241 k on it. I paid a tad over $4000.00 for it and spent about @2.5 k on it over the last three years. I now have a great set of wheels.
The car you describe , I would not walk away from, I would RUN.
As said above, keep looking they are out there . Look in the country.
They may have a few more ks on them but they are highway ks
Plus unless you like washing the damn thing, do not buy black.
    Regards Nick.
    PS best of luck.
