    2003 disco fuel problem?

    Hi All
I have 2 problems with my disco td5.It runs fine until I try to accelerate, then dies at about 3000 to 3500 rpm.It will go to about 3800 in neutral. It is not overboosting and the maf,map and the sensor on the air box are all ok.The air intake pressure is showing 215 to 217 at 3000 rpm and drops off a little if I rev alittle harder. The turbo seems to be ok.I fitted an aftermarket fuel pump about 8 months ago an it cuts out after about 30 seconds with ignition on. There are no leaks from the fuel pressure regulator.

Problem 2 just came up. I purchased a fuel pressure tester and removed the fuel temp sensor but none of the supplied adapters fitted so I refitted it.
Now it runs terrible -like its on 3 cylinders. I purged the system twice but no difference. I did notice a second buzz coming from somewhere under the dash I havent noticed before.
    Any ideas would be appreciated

Does sound like you have maf probs. Have you disconnected it and run the car? What "aftermarket" pump did you fit? Was it a direct replacement in the tank? Sounds like you may have a bad connection after playing with the temp sender.

Yes I have done the maf test. The pump was a direct replacement,spectromatic-I think. The little clip on the sensor went west ages ago but I wired it on. It seems a good connection.I have ordered a new sensor just in case. I have also changed the injector loom a little while back as a precaution at the time.

Fuel filter?, air bleed off in filter housing?, injector copper washers?, does the pump sound like its cavitating? , if not check for delaminated intercooler hoses , especially the 2 on the hot side of intercooler

A new fuel filter and silicone intercooler hoses have been fitted. The pump is noiser than the origional but does not sound too bad.I ordered an air bleed off valve today after reading about it for the first time and will fit it as soon as it arrives. This problem has been driving me nuts and it probably [hopefully] is something simple like that. How do you tell if the injector washers need replacing.
    Thanks John

Normally the pump will make a sound akin to a strangled cat , but another way to test is to brim the fuel tank , then run the motor while checking for air bubbles , if your old pump was stained/blackened when you removed it that is a good indicator as the carbon from combustion will make its way back to the tank when the washers are leaking

From memory the old pump was clean. When I get it started properly I will check for air bubbles. It will take about a week for the new parts I ordered to arrive and I will see how it goes Then

I had a similar problem with the 3000rpm limit. Check your hoses from the inter cooler pipe to the waste gate modulator. I had a crack at the base of it. Some new vac hose in there and I'm back to normal.

The spectromatic is a good thing. I have read various posts on this forum indicating that it is as good as OEM.

I purchased one of these to carry for a spare. A few years ago I lent it to "Crash". After he fitted it the car was still playing up.
He had the problem sorted and from memory the pump was not that flash

I have since read on here someone else using one with not great results.

So for me the jury on these is still out.

Just did a search and found what I had previously read. Have a read of this thread especially post 23.
