    Power steering help needed Td5

I've got an extremely noisy PS system - as soon as the steering wheel is turned and last driver noted it was very hard to turn the wheel.

There's fluid leaking but haven't been able to check properly it's likely from the pump but there is plenty in the reservoir so it hasn't run dry.

What is the failure mode of these things and is it likely a pump replacement needed? It doesn't look overly difficult to do in RAVE.

Car is 2002 and done about 240k km on original.

    thanks

Your symptoms all point to the pump. Oil could be leaking from elsewhere though.

If you can't find it, fit a new pump and if your leak disappears all will be good.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Thanks Dave. Got to have a look in daylight and no leaks visible on the pump or any of the hoses but looked like the reservoir had been overflowing. I moved the hose from the reservoir to the pump and saw that it rotated easily at the join to the pump so clamp was loose. I'm guessing that is where air is getting sucked into the pump and the noise is cavitation. The foaming caused the overflow.
I've replaced the clamp and will bleed the system. Hopefully a cheap repair.

I just replaced my power steering pump and it was actually pretty easy. Hopefully your cheap fix works though. If it doesn't it's only an hours job to replace.

Looks like the air leak has been fixed and the cavitation noise has gone. Will bleed the system to make sure it's all clear. I might get around to replacing that suction side pipe as I'm sure the rubber has hardened - it is 12+ years old after all.
