    Did my Fuel Pump die, sitting in the driveway?

    Drove the Disco (2003, Td5 Auto - 136K) on Wednesday to get its pink slip (passed with flying colours) its only a short drive across town, maybe 5 kays max.
    Fuel Light was on, car started and drove as per usual, no funny noises, nothing to indicate a problem.

    Parked it in the driveway wednesday afternoon, all is well.

    Started the old girl on Monday morning to move it into the shed and fit its new front springs, fuel pump makes that horrible squelching, gurgling noise that it makes when youve had the fuel system open and there is air in the system. hmmm, not good.

    Fit springs, re-seal fuel regulator block (slight weep) hoping this is causing the air in the fuel system.
    Still there...

    Check under car, and find moisture around the fuel filter at rear of car, tighten fuel filter about 1/4 turn, start car, still gurgling and squelching, quick drive around the block to check the springs, noise gone, assumed fixed.

    Wednesday morning, start car to adjust SLS heaights to match front springs, fuel pump sounds worse than ever, squeeling when running. Drive to servo, get 1/2 tank of fuel, struggles to start when leaving servo...

    Get home, pump sounds fine, but when switched off and re-started, makes the "air in system and needs bleeding noise" for a few seconds...

    the longer it is left, the longer it takes for the air to be bled out of the system.

    So, do I throw a new fuel pump at it?
    Or do I have dramas elsewhere???

    Just from my experience if my fuel light is on and I park it on even a slight uphill slope it won't pick up the fuel.

    Forgot to ask V8 or TD5

    Forgot to say - Td5.

    Ive never experienced it before, and I usually run it to Empty. It gets very seldom driven tho which is really burning my pyss...
    One would think that the fuel system would have bleed out any air by now...

    You will probably have to replace fuel pump , they don't like running with low fuel levels as the pump uses the fuel as a heat sink
    Running low means running hotter which usually means a short life.
    Still worth checking to make sure injector washers are OK first.
    Also worth going around the block a few times to see if it comes good
    Don't know what burning my pyss means

    Running low on fuel also concentrates any rubbish contaminates in the fuel tank. Dirt seems to kit pumps in our experience.

    Also When fitting new pumps it is a good idea to clean the tank out and fit a new fuel filter.

    So the pump is running.
    Let's ignore whether it is failing or not for the moment and consider that:
    - you have air in the system which the pump is attempting to deal with.
    - have opened the fuel system to re seal the reg block introducing air in the system.
    - found the fuel filter leaking - another possibility for air in the system.

    I would ensure the system is sealed correctly before getting a new pump.

    Come on mate use some logic here your fuel pump is always taking fuel from the bottom of the tank .
    Why would it be different when low on fuel the rubbish is always going to be at the bottom of the tank where it sucks the fuel up any time

    Id also ask if the fuel filter has been changed recently . The rubber seal can get get stuck from the old filter in the filter housing meaning two gaskets which cause it to suck air as it is not sealing correctly

    Also noticed you said you resealed the fuel block ..... Did you use a new gasket? . you can't use gasket cement or silicone .

    I agree with Mario about low fuel. Running it constantly below 1/4 will kill! I know of a few that never fill the tank and seem to replace pumps often. I have no idea if my low fuel idiot light works because its never down there. Not far tween servos now, even outback,'cept the canning and simpson
