    Thinking of buying a Discovery 2

    Hi all,


    First post so please go easy...:-)


    I'm looking at a 2000 Discovery 2 Td5 manual with 336,000 k's on it for $7,450. It's at 2000 Land Rover Discovery Td5 Manual 4x4 MY00.5


    I've read just about every post here regarding this model so I've got a list of the usual suspects to be aware of. And yes. I will get it checked out properly before I part with any money.
    Question is, is it vastly overpriced or is it just "dealer overpriced"? It does have a service history up until about 270,000 k's which is OK-ish I s'pose.


    I'm no stranger to LR's - I've owned Series 1, IIa and III Land Rovers and a Range Rover classic so I know it's not really a car but more of an incurable disease which I caught about 45 years ago from the S1. The SIII was a diesel and was the MOST reliable car that I've ever owned and I STUPIDLY sold it about 15 years ago. IDIOT...:-( I know that maintenance, maintenance and more maintenance and a willingness to mop up the dropped oil is the key to successfully building a "relationship" with any LR so I'm quite prepared for the inevitable events"...-

    doesnt seem over priced to me.

    Really, buying any car with 330KK on it is a risk.


    I personally would look for the rare low mileage ones that come up, even if you have to pay another $5K,wait until one comes up and travel for it..


    I bought mine 2 years ago for $12.6 with 134KK on it now 170Kk, and it has been reliable, with the exception of a new alternator needed the day of buying! and the usual suspects such as Fuel Pressure regulator and renewing all hoses and pulling the sump to check the oil pump bolt, and fixing several oil leaks .
    Also my fuel manifold died on the GRR!!!
    At 330K, I would suspect that the gearbox would be tired, the transfer need machining of the case, and several other age related problems that may not be immediately apparent eg the front ball joint boots .

    If an auto is acceptable my son has a similar vintage and mileage one that had engine and automatic transmission replaced by a Landrover dealer aprox 100K ago for less money

    The idea of an auto is quite acceptable to me. I have however, been forcefully informed that an auto is most certainly not on.

    I know that it's a risky proposition. I'll go over and have a squint at on Saturday and be prepared to say "no thanks" and walk away at the slightest inkling of anything untoward.

    I'm expecting to have to fix all sorts of things within the first year of ownership. As I said, I've had LR's and an RR in the past so at least I've an inkling of what I'm up for.


    What I'm really looking forward to is getting rid of the old Hyundai. I'm pretty sure that Hyundai is Korean for electrical problem....

    Hey Mark,

    At the risk of being blasphemous in the D2 section, if you can't find a decent D2, would your son be happy getting a D1 instead? When I went looking to buy a Disco, I only had a limited purchasing window and was dead set on a D2. After hunting high and low, the only ones around at the time were either buckets of crap requiring lots spent on them, or really expensive - no happy medium. By complete fluke, I happened to see a well looked after, low mileage D1 for a good price tucked in the corner of a car yard as I was driving past, and that is what I ended up buying. Worth a thought as you negotiate the D2 market.
