Maintenance Free Batteries? Or "you can't do Maintenance Batteries! Take note of the vent in your maintenance free battery! It's not there for looks. If the charging voltage exceeds the gassing voltage the battery will vent the electrolyte in vapour and with no way for you to replenish it the battery will have a reduced service life. A normal wet cell battery that you can maintain will more often than not last longer.

Where I live up in Cairns with the temp it the 30s most of the time my gassing voltage is 14v. I haven't checked but the battery temp on a drive would be around 50deg I would think, so now the gassing voltage drops to 13.8. Down south your right your gassing voltage at 20deg is 14.5 so you would be fine charging in the low 14s as long as the battery stays cool. BUT keep an eye on your voltage in the summer time.

So my Disco immediately after starting will hit 14.1 then drops to a steady 13.7 within a few min. PERFECT!

Good one Pedro yes EVERY Disco (and Euro cars) should have a calcium battery But I know some pretty cheap bastards that will stick in anything that fits and complain why there cheap arse battery only lasted a year.

So Bollocks? it's all in your perspective

Pedro question, where's the golden triangle?
Interesting. So, what you are saying is Queensland cars have different regulators fitted to their alternators than Victorian cars.

I know VE Commodores have their voltage controlled by the computer. I have seen voltages of 16v on their system. I wonder, do they have different software on the Queensland cars than the Victorian cars?

I have noticed my voltmeters usually sit around 14.4v.

All Discovery 2 are factory fitted with a 14V alternator, regardless of where they get sold.

My D2 shows between 13.8V and 14.7V with the engine running.

I've seen voltages between 12.5V and 15.7V with the engine running in my VF Crummydoor. Currently showing 15.1V.

Mine Fluctuates between 11.9v and 13v. Most of the time it's around 12.5v.

Does that mean I have a problem?

Ah Mick your taking the ****. I'm sure the Disco's are fitted with the same alternator where ever in the world. My Disco was originally sold in Black Forest in SA so no special Far North Queensland voltage regulator

After starting you will get a higher charge voltage initially as the alternator senses reduced battery voltage. With the temperature we have up here, if I was maintaining 14.4 volts without reducing after 10min driving, I would be thinking I've got a failing battery that never gets to full charge or I've just been doing short trips.

On the Commonwhores if they are computer controlled, do you think they may take into account ambient temperatures? I don't think the Discos' are that smart but they could be.

sounds like the alternator or big voltage drop.

check th voltage at the alternator and and the battery and report back here

You can fix it cheaper if you find such kind of kits close to you:

    1. Land Rover Discovery & Defender TD5 Series 2 Alternator Regulator 98-06 - Starter Motor Repair Kits Starter Motor Repair Kits

    2. Landrover Discovery & Defender TD5 Brushbox for Alternator 98-06 - Starter Motor Repair Kits Starter Motor Repair Kits

there is a chance that the diode pack to be the culprit but this would cause massive stationary drain and it's verifiable only with oscilloscope
    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned

Hey Eevo, while running 12.52 at the battery and 14.34 at the alternator. I guess I've got a problem somewhere. Any idea where to look?
