When my barb broke I used a tap to put a thread in the plastic housing and used a brass hose nipple to connect the hose onto. It was still going strong 3 yrs later when I replaced the radiator.
May be worth a try.

This seriously has to be the most expensive radiator hose. So far I think it has cost $400 and alot of skin and swear words.
Left work, got home, Pulled in driveway and coolant alarm went off (good timing there). Found a pin hole in the top hose that would only show when at 2500rpm. Might have been lower. But the stick I had held it at 2500rpm.
So no problem. I have a spare hose for that.
Bugger me that lower clamp is bugger to get off. Just wish I pulled the radiator out to get the small hose clamp off. Stuffed around for ages, eventually got a pair of vise grips on it enough to wriggle it off. Then had to cut the hose to get it to move.
There was no way that clamp was going back on.

I cut the hose in the same spot for the fitment of my Madman coolant level and temp sensors. Fitted lower hose with new clamp. Slides on to radiator fine.
Needed heating to get on to the Madman joiner thing. Bloody slipped and broke the barb off for that 5/16 hose that goes back to the coolant tank. Not even enough left of the barb to bodge it up so I can get to melb tomorrow.
So now the radiator needs to be replaced. As non of the radiator places even have a part number just for a new end tank.
So moral of the story. If you still have that stupid clamp. Just pull the radiator out. It will save so much time and frustration.
One other thing I noticed on the new hose is the bleed hole has a steel threaded insert in it.

I eternally hate that bottom clip you're talking about. I believe I swore at it for approx an hour and cut up the back of my hands real good too...

It was a long time ago and i done it in alice springs but am sure i used a 1/4 'brass fitting. Tapped it in and smothered the fitting and the plastic in 5 min araldite.
I think you will find that its not under much pressure and thats why once its fitted it held for as long as it did.
