    Td5 burning oil

Help please. I don't seem to have any leaks at the moment (I have had all the common ones which have been fixed as I see them) But my oil level seems to be dropping slowly over the past 10000kms, I've had to put a about a litre.
The reason I think it's burning oil is because occasionally when I first start it and go to take off the engine sort of stutters if I put it in neutral and sink the boot it blows a plume of smoke. After this initial ten second of funny running it runs very well. Also my tailpipe has a bit of soot which it never had before.
Where should I start? I'm leaning towards injector seals and washers? But why does it run good after those initial few seconds? Is oil entering into where diesel should only go?

Injector seals and washers let diesel into the sump, so your oil level will increase.

Check how much oil you have in the pipe between the turbo and intercooler, it could be your turbo seals failing.

Be VERY wary if this is the case, the last thing you want is for it to start running on your sump oil, especially if you have an auto

Thanks but how do I tell if my turbo seals are failing? What do I look for and where would I see oil where are the specific seals and can they be replaced?

As kelvo said check how much oil you have in the pipe between the turbo and intercooler, there will always be a bit in their just make sure it isn't excessive.
Anyone had a runaway motor in an auto, when it starts consuming itself is there anyway to stop it, could you choke an induction hose somewhere?
My father had a Hilux when I was a kid ( Only non Rover 4wd he has ever owned ) and that started to consume itself, he stalled it as it was a manual, scary stuff!!!!

Would disconnecting the battery or computer turn it off?
I will check in the morning but how much oil is too much?

No, a Diesel engine uses compression to ignite, if the engine is running on its own sump oil it will continue to run at seriously high rpm until A) there is no more oil in the sump(See B ), B ) It destroys itself C) you can stall it, but that won't happen with an auto or D) you shut off the air supply to the engine
I will check in the morning but how much oil is too much? A light coating inside the pipe is ok, oil running out is not

Unfortunately turning it off disconnecting the battery won't stop it, they are actually running on their own sump oil once this situation occurs so turning the diesel off does nothing, they get a feed of oil from a blown turbo seal or a buggared piston etc then they take off all on there own. Once they start revving they pressurise the sump to an extent it forces oil through the rings and they keep going and revving until something lets go like a rod or crank etc or they run out of oil and come to a squealing seized stop.
As for judging the amount of oil in the pipes, I would expect to see everything coated in oil just no pooling build up of it...
    Hope this helps..

That's scary stuff in that vid kelvo, I have heard a few stories from the rail yard of a loco motor that ran away....
I would be strangling an induction hose, cut the bloody thing and shove my coat in it I couldn't just stand there.
It would get to a point if you couldn't stop it that it would get too scary to stand beside and you would have to leave it...
Fingers crossed it never happens to one of us.

Also when I tromp the pedal to the floor it shudderes around 3000rpm as if it is hitting a rev limiter. Is this turbo related as well like over boosting?

Could delaminated hoses or an air leak somewhere cause it to blow smoke?
I have found a small leak on the vacuum pump which could be why my oil level is dropping. But that doesn't explain the black smoke.

Also the black smoke is really only when starting first off when cold.

Maybe the bad running and the oil consumption are two separate problems, generally when a diesel burns oil it emits clouds of white smoke, black smoke sounds like it is burning excess diesel.
