What is the cheapest way of fixing it? Where is the best place to buy spare parts.

A mechanic quoted me roughly $500 to have it taken out and electrician fix it and put it back in or about $1000 to replace it with a new one.

I found a new starter motor on ebay for $230 but am not sure if ebay is trustworthy.
The cheap Starters on Ebay as just that Cheap knockoffs from China.
The insides are usually different to the genuine. The components are light if you where to put a genuine on the scales and then weigh the copy.
It's a numbers game, sell heaps at a cheap price and it covers the faulty replacements that come back by volume sold. Price makes them attractive to people looking for that bargain as opposed to the quality you get.
