Dual battery in engine bay

Carls battery trays dont hold a large dimensional battery because you dont need one:tease:
Now did you not mount a yellow top in your silly little battery box under your car :2up:
And my jack now lives under the drivers seat with no probs it s easier to access under the seat:wacko:

yes my second is an optima but in doing what I have done I don't need to go out and buy a new starting battery which when coupled with the cost of carls tray (if you can get hold of him) runs at around $400 for battery and tray , my jack stays where it belongs secured in the correct place :p

I didnt have to buy a new starting battery as i already had a yellow top but i did need a new aux battery so it just happens i bought a second yellow top:angel:

I am not a fan of aux batteries mounted in a hot engine bay nor cluttering up a pretty crowded area as it is so......

I have only just sold my faithful D2 however, I removed the LHS rear storage box and mounted an AGM sealed battery in its place. Sat it on some marine ply and secured it with a strap that came with a plastic battery box that I decided not to use so it is snug and secure. The only additional expense has been a Traxide kit to wire it up and I added a few more 12V outlets in and around the rear of the vehicle. No need for extra battery mounting points or custom made heat shields etc.

That was 3.5 years ago and the addition of a Drifta kitchen unit slides right in and is not obstructed by the battery.

I added additional wiring (Also from Traxide) down to an Anderson plug at the rear so I can charge a 3rd Aux battery in my camper trailer while driving so power wasn't an issue for quite a few days camping.

It really is a 'set & forget' installation and being a maintenance free battery, I would look at it from time to time but after 3+ years it has given 100% service up until I waved the D3 good bye.

Unfortunately, I don't have the room in the rear of my D4 without some major modifications so an engine mount is the only option although an ARB air compressor mounted up inside the bullbar works a treat!

AGMs don't like excessive heat I believe. Mine is going in the rear of the drawers.

Yeah I did have a 130ah in the rear cargo bin area a while back although due to the weight it used to make the plastic sqeek a fair bit..so when it died I never put one in the rear again. Maybe with some new draws in the rear I could accomodate a battery again somewhere??

I got my drawers made with a compartment with a lift off lid at the rear behind the drawer which is just tall enough to take an AGM on its side, so that's the plan.

I took mine out of the engine bay after a couple battos got cooked and mine is a V8.

Been very happy with a SLA bat in SLS tray.

I put an ARB tray in the engine bay and briefly used the battery they recommended, an Exide liquid acid. Disaster, boiled and leaked acid everywhere.

Next I cooked 2 agms despite beefing up the shielding. Took some new bracketing and work to fit a decent sized battery there too.

Finally did the agm in the rear left panier storage.

Then put the ARB compressor on the battery tray in the engine bay, but it got very hot to touch and I was worried about it's lifespan there. So I built a box around it fitted with a 12v computer fan and flexible duct from next to the radiator. Looks weird but is effective at keeping the temp down to reasonable figures. There's a post on here somewhere with pics which I can find if anyone's interested.

I had my battery under the bonnet on a custom tray. This lasted 7 years before requiring replacing. Probably in the same league as yellow tops, add a bit of heat shielding as suggested above. I have also seen a second battery on the air compressor tray underneath.
