sprag clutch in starter motor can play up, if it sounds like its working but not engaging the flywheel/ ring gear, thats usually the prob . Some feedback on your coolant leak would be good
    cheers

    Question Coolant Leak

Changed all the hoses & cleaned up the connections so far all good as far as the leak is concerned now the starter motor has decieded to do its thing as it had new parts put in it worked for a little while the started to make noises like a grinding sound will take it out & check it out to see if the ring gear is damaged or not

No problem, , if your ring gear looks OK ( which it probably will ), then you'll need a new starter motor Starter Motor FOR Land Rover Defender TDI 10PO Discovery TD5 10PO 16PO 2 5L | eBay
Have used these guys a few times with no problems
    Cheers

found another leak a hose at the back of the motor has been blanked off don't know where it goes since I changed all the other hoses this is leaking now I got a new starter motor but not starting to well have to turn the key on then off for about 2 mins all up seems as the fuel needs to be pumped up before you get a smooth start any views on that problem the cheese & kisses is getting stroppy I don't blame her but that's life anyway any suggestions on the 2 problems

Make sure you didnt disturb the crank sensor and the fuel temp sensor's plug while you was working with the hoses

If you have checked the above, and still have the same hard to start problem, is it possible the problem was there before and had contributed to the death of the starter motor?. I'm assuming you are turning the ign on and off to prime the fuel and not cranking for 2 minutes . is the fuel pump cavitating when this is happening ?. If yes , could be a number of things from copper inj washers to bleed valve in fuel filter housing and anything in between , none of which ....sadly will lift your missus's state of mind. In the mean time to prime the fuel pump turn ign on and press the accelerator pedal 5 times this will bleed the system handy if you change fuel filter etc
