Just finished putting in the new regulator. Success! I could only get a genuine Denso today. $100 for those interested. $25 for the bush kit.

It's good it works but if there was no output at all IMO the problem was the brush box not the regulator

Reused the same new brush box, only this time replaced the regulator.
This is why I hate electrics.
You have an electronic item that appears to have failed. You pull it apart to find the issue. Can't find anything wrong and reassemble. Bingo! It works but you don't know why.

All kind of oddities can happen, just measure the voltage on the battery with engine running to be on thye safe side cos only the fact that the warning is not on doesnt mean that there's good charging too...that warning lamp's function is not the best engineering, it goes off if it gets above 7.6V on the earth path
