The one I just bought had the same symptoms, I found the head gasket gone, well at least on the way. Apparently the Elring gasket gives you some warning it is going before it actually goes, sounds like you have caught it. I confirmed it by running the engine with the radiator cap off briefly when I started the engine. There was a lot of "agitation" going on in the expansion tank. Cost me $400 for the gasket set and new head bolting. If the head is OK could be quite a cheapish fix. Despite looking OK my head was slightly warped so I had it skimmed as a safety option. Runs fine now.......
