What does the TD5 and trans combo weigh?

Hi will hopefully have everything ready to pull out Monday morning question is what does it all weigh I figure trans is 100 kg and transfer box around the 60 kg mark but cannot find the engine weight V8 is around the 190kg so would think the diesel comes in at around 250 kg.

Reason I am asking is thing of pulling it out in one piece I can get the height and will compress the front springs and let air out of tyres if needed.

A Td5 and ZF is 303Kg. Not including transfer case, which is another 60-70Kg depending on if the hand brake drum is still attached

Would have to advise against one piece removal, for the sake of starter out , 3 torque converter bolts , couple of inspection plate bolts and some bell housing bolts, and crank angle sensor, all of which will have to be removed anyway, it could potentially save damage to vehicle components and/or self, easier to take engine out first if you have no hoist / transmission jack . if engine doesn't need to come out then I'd go transfer case , then box , also less messy if your rebuilding the box to let the oil drain at least 24 hours before removal

if you're going to try that with an engine floor crane you need a minimum of 500KG lift.

from memory you cant do it anyway with a floor crane because to draw the motor out with the box and tcase on you need to pull it out inline and you wont have enough boom length/angle to lifft the engine far enough to tilt it sufficiently to get it out past the radiator frame.

if you happen to have a big enough crane to do that with enough angle you wont get it in far enough because the front support legs will foul on the tyres.

IF you manage to get your way around all of that, IF you're lifting from the engine lifting point you'll have all the weight of the engine and transmission hanging from just that mount and at an angle it was never ment to be lifted at.

I ship these quite regularly. The ZF with torque converter weighs just short of 80kgs and the Transfer with handbrake drum weighs 75kgs.

Thanks guys have been running the tape over things would be a close thing but will do it seperate the angles to get it out in one piece might make it hard, just have the bell housing bolts to go and tranny cooler hoses. Battery rattle guns make some things quicker.

There was two wires that go to the engine oil cooler these were melted together I presume it is for the oil pressure switch heat from turbo will try and source some heat proof conduit.

    Hi Stevo,
Honestly mate I don't think you'll get it in one. As others have mentioned the length of everything will be to much, never mind the weight.

I have only ever managed to get things out in two pieces, engine out the bonnet and g/box and tranny out underneath. And it is awkward underneath, the vehicle needs to be quite a way off the floor. I found that one of the removal trolleys from Bunnings was low enough to drop the gearbox onto and get it past the front axel coming out forward from underneath. I had to support the front of the vehicle off the axel to get the height and the clearance. Because of the weight distribution with the transfer case be careful, the gearbox will want to drop to one side. Make sure you have everything supported right before you let the cross member go, make sure you are well clear.

Wishing you the very best of luck.

    Cheers Marty
