Both the V8 and td5 are reliable motors, provided they have been regularly maintained. The weak spots of both are well known and and a bit of searching of the forum will find numerous discussions detailing them.
On the td5 engine side I had the fuel pressure regulator and ECU loom replaced when I bought the car 3 years ago and have had no other issues since then.

A 4.6 in an Oz D2 or D2a as opposed to North America in the D2a, will only be found in 4.6d if someone has dropped in a Range Rover block or has bought a stroker kit....its getting more common to do that but still a comparitive rarity...and people with 4.6s generally hang onto them because they are such a good bit of kit.
Td5 is a good motor. I just like tweaking tails...

Off the line from idle with Auto's the rattler wouldnt even see which way a 4.6 went;)

If you want to travel then avoid the V8. Having to stop at each servo you encounter becomes tiresome and expensive. The V8's might get you away from the lights a bit quicker than the Td5 but that's only really a benefit if you're drag racing, not touring.Quote:

V8 on sequential LPG. Problem solved. I have posted up figures before but on LPG it is as cheap or cheaper to run than the TD's. LPG available all up and down the east coast and out to Longreach etc.
Its not just an off the lights thing. Offroad just off idle in low range nothing beats cubic inches. The TD need to spool up the turbo to create the same effect as a 4.0 or 4.6.
Just drive both. If you can live with the rattle (I cannot) of the TD5 then this widens your choices and just look for a vehicle with CDL installed as a D2 or D2a (standard) with all the other gear and servicing etc that you wont. Either way you will enjoy the ride then.
