    Smoking alternator I think

    Help needed.

when I pulled up home I had smoke coming from the engine bay, popped the hood and had a good look, it seems to be coming from the alternator.
My questions are do they smoke as they die?
    And
What voltage are people getting at idle?

I plugged my nanacom in and at idle it's only making 12.5v when I rev it up it goes to close to 14 but only at high revs

    It's a td5

I should add the smoke is intermittent so it might not make smoke for five minutes then it will produce smoke for a minute.

Is the smoke coming from the alternator or from the belt due to a siezed idler pulley or tensioner?

Graeme I don't think it's the belt it isn't getting hot and the smoke is intermittent. I thought it might've been the a/c due to the irregular smoking. I don't think I'm making enough volts they have a vacuum pump attached which is fed with oil so maybe oil is causing smoke
