Discovery 2a - Will disconnecting the battery harm the computer in any way?

    Hi,

I'm working away and my wife needs to move the Discovery, but it turns out that the battery is completely flat.

She's going to buy and fit a new battery, but I wanted to check first that disconnecting the battery and fitting a new once isn't going to mess with any of the on board computers.

Will it re-set any of the security information? Will the keys need re-programming?

Or can it do any other damage computer wise?

Also is there anything that she needs to watch for when re-starting after it's been completely flat for a week or two?

    Many thanks in advance.

Will need the security code for the radio.
Keys won't need to be re-programmed as far as I know. I've disconnected mine multiple times and no adverse effects in regards to the keys or ECU.

I would just try to charge the battery before buying a completely new one. Use a charger that has a reconditioning mode of some sort, my ctek has one I use to keep the batteries in shape.

At the very least get it tested by someone to see what the issue is. There might me a parasitic drain or charging problems which the test should be able to tell you.

Hi woody as above re: possible parasitic drain , radio code if original ,but tell your wife she might want to have the key handy as when she connects the new battery the alarm could go off so get ready to press the unlock button on the fob,

    Cheers

    Thanks for the help guys.

I'll pass this on to my better half.

The plan is that she'll try recharging the old battery and get a new one if it doesn't hold a charge.

It's not the original radio, so hopefully no worries on that front.

But have either of them been so flat that they didn't light the dash lights? It'll depend on the state of the alarm / voltage , I didn't say it would , just that it could.

    Hi Andy,
If you go away in future put a CTek charger on the battery via a quick connect coupling. Keeps the battery charged and depending on how long you are away after I think it is 14 days the CTEk goes into a cycling mode to keep the battery active.

    Cheers Marty.

There is no issue with disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. You'll lose the distance on the trip meter and have to put in the radio code if original radio or frequencies / time into clock. No special start sequence or anything else required.

Thanks for that. I have a Ctek charger but have just ordered a solar powered battery charger which I will hook up when I'm away on my next rotation. Hopefully that will prevent this happening again.
