Would be nice to compare I have just removed the rear.I think the cats are the next thing to fix and seeing if I can fit Range Rover headers on it. Here is the rear removed [ame]https://youtu.be/gSBPGVWx7Sk[/ame] sounds louder than it is.
hi all,
as the reason that I fund the V8's thirst is to hear the V8 sound, I've just had the centre muffler taken out and replaced with a straight through pipe. So I thought I'd feedback how it sounds. I thought it might be too loud or droney, but actually it's really not loud at all.
At idle - nice soft V8 bom, bom, bom, bom.....
up to 2000rpm, a bit droney, as the auto kind of hold at these revs when accelerating gently, but reasonable deep V8 sound, not raspy. Also at 80kph (some freeways in Oz) a bit droney, but not overly so, normal radio volume and you can't really hear it.
above 2000rpm, OMG, I love it! It's not overly loud, just deep throbbing V8 sound, smooth as silk, beautiful! 100kph, 2200rpm, just right. Real V8 sound.
I will try and get a recording somehow, easier said than done!

Interesting, I'll try and do a similar recording to compare. Also driving under load always sounds different to static reving.
The guy at the workshop also mentioned high flow cats would be good, but $1200 is a bit steep considering all the other issues I'm probably going have to fix!
after 3 RV8's and various exhausts
exchanging the huge center for a "sports" and deleting the rear res is by FAR the best option,,, (other than a 4-2-1, dual 1 and 3/4's with no cats)
That drone you can hear (above vid) will just vanish and you still get the right noise out the end,,![]()

I have free flow cats, Hurricane stainless free flow (centre) muffler and stock resonator. The sounds is very nice. I wouldnt want it louder when I get up it, and NO drone at any speed.
Cheers
I've got a Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo running twin 2.5" cats off a Toyota V8 Landcruiser (OE catalytic convertors). Got them cheap from my local exhaust guy. My reasoning for that particular application was that if they can flow enough for a 4500cc V8 (2250cc per bank), then they should be fine for a 1500cc bank on a FI motor.
So marketing hype aside, put some brain cells towards the actual flow capability of the cats before you rush out and buy speed shop parts. If you are chasing sound, not performance, then it will be cheaper to go used factory gear. Speak to any contacts you might have at places like 4wd accessory fitters, exhaust shops, etc. You usually need to pay (they do fetch a good scrap value due to the good metals inside), but otherwise much more affordable than off the shelf.
The aftermarket stuff has generally poor construction (I've melted 2 sets, and shot the metal/ceramic catalysts out the tail pipe). The speed shop stuff also has a much lower precious metal content (palladium, platinum, etc- the 'catalyst'), meaning that they are not working as well for reducing emissions.

'El Burro' 2012 Defender 90.
all good information guys.
But for anyone who want's to hear their V8 for <$100, and doesn't mind a little drone (still with a burble though) under 1800rpm, awesome sound above and great overun sound (manually shifting down) then deleting the middle muffler seems to be a cheap solution.
No noticeable negative effect on engine smoothness, performance or fuel economy.
