Reduced V8 idle temps by 12c

    Hi all,

As mentioned in my introduction, my v8 was idling a bit hot, up to about 102c and I was able to stop the viscous fan with a rolled up newspaper. So I ordered a new viscous coupling and 6c lower temp thermostat PEM101020.

Gave the system a good flush tonight and fitted the new parts, now she idles at 90c. I'm much more comfortable with that. Also, it's not possible to stop the viscous fan with the newspaper now, so definitely shifting more air.

I'm wondering whether to stick with oat coolant or go for the green stuff. I think its always had oat and worried about mixing withe green even though I flushed it well. So might stick with oat.

I have an engine saver to fit too, and over temp alarm.

Interestingly, the old thermostat had 2002 on it, so I bet it was never changed! Seemed to work ok though and was pretty clean inside, just an orange coating. As it's got a full lr service history, I wonder how many times the previous owner paid for it to ne changed!

    Standard D2 V8 thermostat runs at 96,,

    totally ridiculous.

Red Oat will find EVERY possible leak in the system,,

You only need Oat if you have dissimilar engine metals, head to block.

If you change it you need to flush it well

Yeah, I might stick with oat, it's not leaking yet (touch wood) and i can't guarantee it's all flushed out even though the water ran clear. Will grab some tomorrow from supercarp

Where does one get the lower temp thermostat from? And isn't there one that is even lower than 90? Like 82 or 86?

Im told its the thermostat that comes from the Freelander 1.

I put one in mine and from then on had regular sub 90c running temps.

But it only really delivers that if the rest of the cooling system is up to spec.

    Cheers, Jerry
