Should I sell my 9000lb winch? No dual battery setup.

    Hey guys,

My disco came with a 9000lb winch installed on it. But I wonder how useful it really is for expeditions... Also I don't have a dual battery setup, and I read it's not good to use the main vehicle battery to power the winch.

Should I sell it and use the money for more useful mods?

Your main battery gets its power straight from the alternator, that's the one you want to power the winch even if you had a dual setup.

I know of many government suppied 4x4's that run winches of only a start battery.
Key is while you allow the winch to cool keep the motor running to charge the battery.

keep it, winch short and heavy or long and light get a snatchblock keep an eye on the volts while you;re winching, if its dropping much below 11, stop and assess. keep the idle high while you winch.

use a 1:5 winch rest ratio and you wont have any issues.

    add the DBS later.

dont forget to test the winch occasionally

As above. Though if you don't think you'll ever do the sort of off-road driving where you might need a winch, then you can get rid of the weight, especially if it's still got a steel cable.

But no problems with keeping it if you think you might use it - don't flatten the battery, keep the engine running, short pulls etc.

And test/operate it every so often, pull it apart every year or two if it doesn't get used and check it out and grease the bits - I did mine for the first time a while ago and it's pretty easy.

    Cheers!
    Michael.
