I have lateral movement in my rear ACE torsion bar which slides about 15mm. This causes a thunk when reversing steering direction i.e. exiting a roundabout.
Is it only the bushes (no 13 on the attached diagram) that stop this movement or is it something else?
Has anyone else had this issue and fixed it with new torsion bar locating bushes(part 13)? I have seen the post on the cracked clamps - part 12.
Looking the system there doesnt appear to be anything substantial that stops lateral movement - am I right. The torsion bar to chassis links on L and R sides dont achieve solid lateral location??

The Bushes (Part 13), do wear and will cause a clunk when changing direction and the ACE reacts within the bush slop. These for me last about 70,000km. Lever the bar up and down. These wear front and back.
Also, as age and distance creeps up, also check the rear links from the axle to the sway bar (Part 10) as the ball joints develop slop before they fail. when this is happening it can clunk with a change in direction. Likewise, lever the bar to change the load on these or feel them as somebody rocks the car.
And, also check the watts linkage as all 3 bushes are prone to wearing and that will also clunks with a change in direction. While under it, have someone push the very back of the car sideways so that it rocks left to right. While this is happening be under the back and look for movement in the 3 bushes. They all wear.

The watts linkage is OK under lateral rocking from the rear as you describe.
Ill report back on the culprit. Ill try bush 13 first if I can get the part - currently in Cairns.

thanks Fisherx. I picked them up from Hypertune today and it solved the issue.
So if any one has a dull thunk in the rear of an ACE equipped D2, then check for lateral movement of the torsion bar -about 10mm.
Buy part RBX 101181 and replace the old bushes.
Just do them one at a time after loosening both.
If you remove both then it is a real struggle with one person. You need to marry the clamp to the bush and then locate the clamp into the slot and use a pair of vice grips to provide the initial clamping prior to bolting -quite fiddly.
