About 18 months ago, the transmission warning light on my 2003 D2 TD5 dash came on during a trip. I pulled aside and let it cool down for a few minutes and the light disappeared. Up until about 4 weeks ago, I never saw the warning light again and it all seemed fine. Looking at my records, the trans oil was replaced about 75000kms ago, and is due for replacement at the next service which is in two months time.
Fast forward, about 4 weeks ago I towed a 2 tonne caravan for the first time to test my new electric brakes. It was all fine until I drove up a moderate hill and locked the transmission to 3rd gear. The warning light came on. I did not panic and did everything according to the owners manual. Pulled aside and let it idle and the light disappeared like last time.
I'd like to know what might be causing this issue. Is it the possibly degraded trans oil or the temp sensor at the oil cooler, or both? Having seen this happen twice over 18 months doesn't give me the confidence to tow anything heavy until I resolve this issue. I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts on this.
Cheers
