D2 auto transmission warning light on

Hi, I'm looking for some advice on what could be the problem when the auto transmission warning light came on and stayed on.

    2003 discovery 2 with tdi5.

I had a recon auto installed approx. 15 months ago. At the same time I had heavy duty drive plate, torque converter, new transmission hoses and second auxiliary auto cooler installed as I read about the over heating issue with the AT under load or towing.

2 days ago I did a bit of bush 4x4 up hills and through water. The next day I was on the beach working hard in soft sand when the light came on. I stopped to let it cool down but the light has stayed on.

The disco drives fine and I can't detect any issue with gear changes. It didn't go into limp mode.

I have read on AULRO that one possibility is that it could be the sensor? I will be very disappointed if its the recon gearbox

I want to sort this out asap so I can continue on my holiday with piece of mind and I don't breakdown with the missus and kids.

Any ideas and any recommendations of a good auto transmission place in the Newcastle area who know discovery 2 autos?

    Cheers

IIRC there's a gearbox oil temperature sensor somewhere on the RHS of the radiator. Its connector may need a clean-out if it managed to get water inside.

Alternatively I think that the transfer case temperature sensor (LHS of TC when fitted) is connected to the same circuit so its connector may need cleaning out. If no TC temp sensor then the connector is still there so may be full of wet dirt.

    Have you a fault reader?
    Does it give any faults?

If the light comes on when you first start up it is certain to be the sensor, as it is impossible for the transmission to be hot.
I had one fail in NT after a water crossing.
Good news is that you can change it , and very little if any transmission oil will come out.

Hi, thanks for the info. Just checked this morning and the light is on so im thinking its the sensor. I did go through a few creek crossings and wash outs.

Im on hols so I will get motivated and check the connections first and might get someone to look at it. If I was at home I would do it myself.

Is there a better quality sensor than the landy one?

    Cheers

I'm pretty sure that the transfer case temp sensor was only fitted to V8's which means there will be a connector tucked up on top of the transfer case left side that has its contacts exposed to dirt and water (I fitted one to my manual TD5). However if any wet connections should have dried by now then perhaps the radiator's g/box temp sensor or its connector is the culprit.
