Could someone explain the correlation between engine temp and diesel combustion?;)
Serious question?
very basically...
more air and more fuel means more heat.
its easy to miss that if your EGT (exhaust gas temp) is 600 before and after tweaking then the temp in the engine should be the same but its not quite that simple
an EGT of 600 at 5psi is a whole lot less heat than the same 600 at 30psi.
think of it as lighting candles. one candle burns at say 400 degrees and will barely make a dent in warming up a room. light 100 of them and they all burn at 400 degrees but the room gets a lot warmer a lot faster as there is more of the 400 degrees.
Diesels work backwards to petrol, overfuelling makes them run hot, running lean cool.
I have a D2a TD5, with a head gasket that had one more hole in it than the design. I had it fixed. I have been very nervous about the coolant temp, adding 2 litres of coolant 3 days after you buy the car doesn't help. Back in August.
However, two days ago , up in Echuca, with the external temp at 40C Aircon full on. Novacom has coolant temp hovering around 90C, It peaked at 95C, for a second, when I dropped the car into neutral, before a corner.
This is with a standard radiator.
cheers Bo
p.s. just got the internet runninbg out here.
I take my driving lights off when I tow, drops the EGT's noticeably... dragged 3T (LSE on car trailer) up Catherine Hill on the Hume holding 80k's in 4th gear (manual) the other day with the EGT's staying on about 620, it's a hot Inside tune aswell...
D2a Intercooler... factory turbo sitting at 16psi all the way up the hill.
What I am learning is ignore the Nanocom and just trust the gauge...... ( Flame Suit on )
I think LR have got it mostly right allowing the ECU to determine when the gauge should move etc.
I see temps go up to 100 plus with the Nanocom and this was making me nervous.
Now drive with it off or at least not being so worried.
I do however think that the TD5 Discovery cooling is close to the edge at times.
I was considering some bonnet scope or side vents to assist.
In another life I was involved with testing of the new VN V8 Commodore in Police Spec. With roof lights etc. This required driving WOT from out of Port Hedland towards Sandfire.
A lot of effort was made towards sealing all the gaps around the radiator etc so that the only way the air could go is through the radiator etc.
On the VK Commodore Police Cars operatingin the tropics and hot areas, there was a small plastic scoop/spolier to assist this.
Concur...
with Gavins setup in the configuration I drove it in hes comfortably within that margin. with the 3t van on the back hes close to pushing it as I havent seen the van configuration I can easily conceive that its 50/50 and that a change in driver technique will help ease off on it and that if that makes the difference then the radiator upgrade should be enough. If theres no change with a change in driver technique/operating envorinment then with the mods its asking too much and something drivelineish is going to be required to square it.
Yep, the van is a full height brick similar to link, Piazza | Royal Flair Caravans but with HD chassis and off road suspension.
I hate to think what would happen if I did drive aggressively.
Still I haven't had my AT lockup system connected yet, and that might possibly help.
Your next trick Gavin will be deciding what Upgrade/Heavy Duty means,,,
more rows?
more frontal area?
complete alloy construction?
Saudi grill?
found this after a quick Radiators music vid :)

I'd be happy with a PWR rad,,
Hi Pedro. Ironically, that is what I was looking at before being convinced otherwise to stick with std LR by the old since closed/moved Franzone here in Perth, and it is still very much on my radar. If a HD/performance becomes the solution (after testing and all options discussion with Mechanic etc) then I'll fit in as many criteria as I can in the available space - which from memory is not all that much.
I think they retail for around $1K ughhh!
Gavin.
My D2warmed up on hills without a trailer, new everything inc ase intercooler/radiator/thermostat etc.It was better with the standard ecu instead of the nnn with a autologic mid range tune. The 235/85 tyres didnt help,111degC on a hot day on the bigger Albany hwy hills was fairly normal.
I would check all the basics as suggested, next I would do the calculations on defender transfer gearing rather than new diff ratios, and whilst in there an ATB CDL to take the pressure whilst towing the van.
OR,buy a new D4:p:p:p:p
Interested in the van pics when they appear, will check the van area:cool::cool::cool:
