    wheel bearing or tyre noise

howdy folks, just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to tell if a noise is a wheel bearing or just tyre noise? my last wheel bearing that went made it very easy as did the jack up the wheel and try wobble it test. Now ive got a funny whirring noise that changes with speed, type of tarmac. sounds like the opposite front. but no wobble on any wheel when repeat that process. tyres are overa year old now 265/75/16 bridgestone desert dueller all terrains. they have done i think 20000kms now? or more. probably more actually. Ive just had a wheel alignment today as car is nto driving anywhere as nice as it did a few months ago. even suspension feels extremely soft and wobbly now. it has 2inch lift and rear airbags always with 12psi in them. the power steering box and pump is weeping. return to centre does has vanished. car even after wheel alignment feels like it wants wander/wobble slightly down the road. the track rod/tie rod was replaced a couple of weeks ago. Next plan is to check and tighten the steering if necessary as it has a lot of play at present. I know when the last wheel bearing went, steering went funny with that. only replaced one as rest were ok and i could not afford to replace any more at the same time.
even the wheel alignment dude noted how 'wallowy'' my car is when that is something it never was. previously it impressed people with its stabilty around the hills especially. but right now it is rather unpleasant 350000kms so the old girl is getting long in the tooth now and i know something must be worn, but i am better with engines than i am with suspension/steering knowledge
    thankyou in advance

Hi Epic The old girl must be running ok for a while as havent seen you here much Your "wallowing" problem sounds very much like your shocks are worn. They can also make the steering wander, I think because 1 always is worn more than its opposite number. The suspension bushs can also get soft as they age/wear. There is a few other things that can do it but they are more noticeable, like wheel bearings, swivel ball joints(they clunk over bumps) etc.

thanks yes the old girl is going along ok only thing that keeps happening is transmission lines have split. but all new hose now so the old brittle stuff is gone. about to travel to melbourne tomorrow to pick up our new horsefloat so fingers crossed no trouble there and back haha. is like the 4th there and back in one day trip ive done with it! i think new shocks might be first on the list. i am thinking the noise is tyre related but its so hard to decifer haha.
ive not been on too much either as christmas and new years has been mad then just crash out when home as no spoons left hahaha. (if anyones ever read the spoon theory!)

Hi epic, if you want to check for wheel bearing noise , jack up and rotate the wheels , a lot of the time you can feel roughness , otherwise go for a drive and if the noise is noticeably different when cornering that can indicate a wheel bearing. schuy1 , has got you covered re wallowing

cheers haha well i spoke too soon in regards to my disco going along well! just had road trip from hell picking up new horse float from melbourne yesterday :O
weather cause on way over. torrential rains for 800kms! not fun with a wallowing car at all! but the trip back! car decided to just about break down completely! first off electric brake unit died. no cars fault might be wiring issue with float even or power supply has come off. but then discovered a massive trans fluid leak! coming from up above trans somewhere. i do not even know what is up there to be leaking! near belhousing end. but then 150kms from melbourne we lost drive. so all good, topped up trans fluid. then carried on. things just got worse (it had started chugging which i thought was the turbo actuator valve) that chugging stopped after trans was topped up. but it lost a cylinder i think as was not running well and was just pouring out black smoke. would not shift nice at all and couldnt work out its gears when this was happening. then all of a sudden it seemed to return mostly normal, rest of drive continued as normal until got to mt barker when trans started playing up again so i suspect levels are lowish again now. but like a good soldier it still got us home! poor brand new float got covered in trans fluid spray, the black stuff that came out the exhaust, and then just because found a storm half way home as well!
so i have no idea what the heck was/is wrong with my car LOL. i suspect the 5 cyl issue is a dying injector that actually died then revived itself haha. but then not sure if was the trans making it run horrid or the engine making the trans behave horrid. did nto get chance to plug nanocom up today to see if anything comes up on that as we spent all day cleaning the float, cheers disco! haha!

Thats not good! Well the only place Trans Fluid can come from up the front on top is if the gasket seal 'tween the TC housing and intermediate plate that house the pump or the seal 'tween pump housing and main gearbox housing is leaking Either way it is a box out job! The rough running sounds like an injector loom fault.
Does look like we awoke murphy for you

Oh god i hope not. Auto boxes are so heavy to pull out haha. Will be getting under there with the inspection camera tomorrow. Still wasnt able to look at it today as ended up busy again. Sucks when i cant drive other cars with my disabilities. Disco has done this on purpose i swear. It knows that we were about to start getting the impala ready to be on the road and it obviously doesnt want to share the attention. When impala will be modded for me to drive so id havr a spare car then! Well i have 3 cars but only the disco is on the road and is my 'daily' maybe ill get a miracle and wake up fixed one morning and can be done with the nightmare that is automatic transmissions to go back to manual would be magic lol
