I filled the reservoir, loosened, or rather never tightened, the out let pipe to the steering box, then turned the pump by hand slowly, using a rocking motion as I turned the pulley. When there was a flow without air I tightened the outlet and continued the turning until it got firmish. Which it will do as it fills the steering box. I then fitted the belt and started it up and way it went :) The reason I did the hand prime was mainly to avoid any dry start wear which could happen with the loads from engine drive.
I had also used the air compressor to blow as much of the old oil from the circuit as possible as I wanted to do a fill with new oil. So my system was pretty empty . Hope this helps.
