    Td5 timing chain guide question

    Hi Guys,

I am in the process of reassembling the Td5 timing chain assembly. I have just fitted new guides and am surprised that the adjustable guide can be rocked 'fore and aft' 1.8mm on its bolt and sleeve assembly - is this normal as it seems a bit weird to me (Note, I am not talking about the rotational movement it is supposed to have).

    Cheers, Charles

Charles put the old one on and see if it has the same movement.
There are only bolts that hold it on. there are no spacers of any kind shown on microcat, only a bolt.

    Hi Mario,
Unfortunately the old one got disposed of ... wasn't really thinking when I tidied up! The fit of the bolt through the sleeve 'feels' the same as the original, I just never checked whether the old one rocked...

The issue seems to stem from the sleeve which is retained in the guide with a circlip and has around 1mm of fore / aft travel (See pics). This translates to 1.8mm of rocking motion at top of guide level with deck of block. I am leaning towards thinking this is normal.
    Cheers, Charles

Is this the side that has the hydraulic tension bolt pushing into it? If so, it probably doesn't matter that it has some play in it just siting on the front of the engine with no chain or tension bolt.

I cannot remember if mine had play or not.

    Hi Jazz,
Yep, this is the adjustable side that has the tensioner applying pressure, so I agree that it is probably fine once fully assembled. I just feel like an absolute **** for biffing the old one before fitting and checking the new one - mind you, giving my wife a good laugh as she reckons it is the first time I have ever thrown old parts away!
