    Please help cam sensor fault

Hey everyone, new to the forum so be gentle, here is the short of the long, I have a 2001 d2 v8 it did a ring so I did an engine swap for a used unit that was rebuilt 50000 k's ago, my problem is this on the scan tool at my local workshop I get a cam sensor fault, and the poor running of the car is consistent with that, I have changed the sensor, checked all wiring for sensor, and because I was told it could be the crank sensor I changed that too, ok so the car idle low and rough than jumps up then back down again, when driving it will be fine for a bit then loss of power, surging and missing then comes good then the same again, also i have a replacement ecu but have no access to a nanocom or such tool with the ability to sync it to the car, thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this and anyone able to help with either a suggestion or help with syncing the new ecu. Iam located in the southern highlands NSW.

My understanding of the function of the cam sensor is that it establishes the position of the motor IE which cylinder it has shut down on, so that starting is facilitated, ie the motor does not have to do a full revolution for the ECU to find the gap in the sensor gear on the flywheel.

If faulty It is usually associated with slow starting.

AFAIK the crank sensor then becomes the primary source of signal for the ECU while the engine is running.

You really need a scan to establish the faults recorded as it could be crank sensor, O2 sensors , or MAF, or faulty coils or leads . I would tend to think coils or leads from your description.

I'd go for the MAF sensor first for these symptoms, i've seen cases when generic OBDII readers gave erratic readings on D2s, even though the petrol engine should be OBDII compliant the diagnostic protocol is a bit LR specific

In the event of a MAF sensor signal failure any of the following symptoms may be observed:
l During driving engine rev/min may dip, before recovering.
    l Difficult starting.
    l Engine stalls after starting.
    l Delayed throttle response.
    l Emissions control inoperative.
    l Idle speed control inoperative.
    l Reduced engine performance.

    l MAF sensor signal offset.

Thanks everyone for the reply, the maf has less then 1000ks on it I got it new right before the first motor did a ring, but i have also swapped in a known working used maf no change, new leads, plugs and swapped the coil pack with a known used spare i had, also I have replaced the crank sensor, I have had it on a scan tool and the error is po340 camshaft position sensor, I guess the only real thing left is the ecu, is anyone near enough to me with a nanocom or similar that is able to sync it to the car able to come to my rescue?
